Laodike doesn’t really seem to be there for any reason. She doesn’t say anything. No one talks to her. She’s just standing there looking pretty. I think there’s a reason she’s standing there, because I did background research on her, but I’m planning on doing a post about her, so you’ll have to wait for that, mwahaha…

I don’t really have much to say beyond that, except yes, I know this post is a week late. April was a bit of a mess and I have a feeling May is going to be a bit of a kerfluffle of a month. I have left the Building Supplies Store and have started a job at a library working at the circulation desk. Future retail comics may star said library, at which point I will create a fake name for it.

In the meantime, enjoy your day my lovelies! Hopefully I’ll have Part 3.2 ready by Wednesday and a Laodike post ready on Friday *fingers crossed*

Book 5, Part 7.2: Oh, Ares

First I would like to say: YES WE FINISHED BOOK 5 AHAHAHAHA…

Second, I am laughing at myself because I thought there would be only one Part 7 and instead there were two and part 7.2 was the longest section I’ve had yet.

You can’t really read it, but on the side of the Helmet of Invisibility it says “Property of Hades.” WHICH makes me ask the question: why the heck does Athena even have this? Did she ask to borrow it? Did she steal it? I mean. Hades doesn’t really show up in the Iliad so why does his helmet. So many questions. So. Many.

I find it fascinating how much everyone hates Ares. I really think that this scene with Zeus and Ares is where Homer shows through. When Zeus is talking about how much Ares’ disgusts him all I really see is Homer stepping into the role of Zeus and using him as a way to express how much he himself hates war.

Paieon is not really important, so I didn’t draw him with anything memorable. He is sort of like an avatar of Apollon/Asklepios or something anyway so… Feel free to ignore him.

But Hebe, man. Do I want to know more about Hebe. Who is this random lower ranking goddess? She helps bathe people, helps them into chariots… It’s just so random. She’s like the extra who fills in the un-cast parts or something.

As for the bathing, it may seem random that Zeus is suddenly shouting at Ares to take a bath but remember, despite how clean he looks in the drawing, he is actually COVERED in GUTS. I cannot draw guts, so I apologize for the lack of them, but the point is Ares is disgusting and gross right now and decided THIS is how he should show up to the Father of the Gods. It is incredibly insulting to show up in front of a god in this state. In pretty much every religious tradition you wash yourself before you enter sacred space. This is true for Egyptians, Canaanites, Israelites, Hittites, and all of the Greeks. And yet Ares shows up covered in intestines and soaked through with blood. What are you thinking, Ares? What are you thinking. Athena and Hera might be sassy and make their opinions clear, but both of them prepared beforehand, dressed well, and spruced themselves up first, being aware of sacred space and the proper ways to behave in front of divinity.

Anyway. I could go on, but there’s that.

AND SO, eventually we’ll start up the next book and I’ll get you a recap of Book 5 and everything. I know we’re behind again, but I worked like 58 hours this past week so I’ve just accepted that this will get done when it gets done. I do start my library job training tomorrow and then I have the rest of the day to work on stuff so *fingers crossed* I can get some Book 6 drawing done.

Book 5, Part 4.2: Dione and a “Silly Little Girl”

Aphrodite is shown as being this “silly little girl,” but she’s the only one who takes Diomedes as the threat that he is.

Dione, Aphrodite’s mother, has a murky backstory. She is connected with Diana, with Aphrodite herself, and with Canaanite/Hittite goddesses (which makes sense, since Troy is a Hittite town).

BUT what is most important about this scene with Dione and Aphrodite is how it parallels, so closely, the scene between Achilles and his mother Thetis. Both Thetis and Dione initially respond with: “Oh no, my poor baby” but as the scenes unfold they begin to read more and more sarcastic. I am not, currently, entirely sure about the relevance of this, but when I figure it out I’ll let you know.

ALSO, yes, I know, this is terribly late. No promises, but if I’m able to get stuff done tomorrow I’ll put up 5.1 on Wednesday and 5.2 on Friday to try and get back on track. More hours is good money-wise, but frustrating creative-wise. Anyways! I hope you have a good day, my lovlies!

Annnnnnnd… We’re back! Huzzah! *throws confetti* It has been so long, my lovelies, so long *sobs loudly* *wails and gnashes teeth*

SO. Moving on.

  1. Never mess with Here. Like. For reals. She gets her way, yo.
  2. What’s up with Carthage being mentioned? Did Carthage even exist at this time? Whaaaaaat? If you are asking yourself these questions: this is sort of an inside joke to myself. In The Aeneid (the one by that kid Virgil) Juno/Hera absolutely loves Carthage (although, in attempts to save it, she comes up with a super sketch plan that ends in death and I’m not sure I would call it a success? but whatevs). BUT we know that years and years and years later there will be the Punic Wars, and Hannibal, and it all ends, ultimately, with Carthage being razed to the ground and destroyed forever by Jupiter/Zeus loving Romans. In my mind this is Jupiter/Zeus getting revenge on Juno/Hera for Troy all those years ago. This doesn’t entirely work because Troy is super, super Hittite but shhhhhh…
  3. Athena plays an odd part in this story and I’m not entirely sure what my thoughts are beyond that, but it’s interesting because she’s wayyyyy more important than Ares and spends a lot of time flying around, interacting with Mortals, making things happen. *ponders a moment*

ANYWAY. We have started Book 4! Hooray! *throws more confetti* We will return on Wednesday for Part 1.2: A Fine Fool.

I love how everyone is convinced Paris is going to lose the duel *cry-laughs*

My text says that Odysseus was thoughtful right in the middle of sacrifice-time and duel-time and doesn’t say why. Honestly, who knows with that man. He could be thinking about a speech, or some sort of plot, or dreaming about french fries. I know I would be.

Polydamas shows up (he’s in the panel with Diomedes). I’ve only drawn him sitting down and I kind of regret having him stand. I feel like he just always lounges around everywhere.

In the last panel Odin shows up. He really needs to be wearing a fabulous wizard hat, but I wanted one of his ravens to be sitting on top of his head (yes, that is a raven *ahem*). For those of you who don’t know, Odin sacrificed his eye in order to gain wisdom/knowledge. He is not actually in The Iliad, but when I imagined Zeus complaining about the burden of knowing things (which he was born with and didn’t need to sacrifice body parts for) Odin just popped up being all, “Really?” and I knew I had to sneak him in here. Mwahahahaha…

Next time we will actually be able to get to the dueling part. SPOILERS, Paris doesn’t die.

I honestly do not know what the “shaggy heart” reference means. Maybe that he’s like a mule? Wild-hearted? Courageous? Who knows?

BTW: Myrine (sometimes spelled Myrina) was an Amazon Warrior. She supposedly fought Atlanteans back in the day. This is an important reference because of the tradition that later in the Trojan War Penthesilea, an Amazon, shows up and fights Achilles.

Also: bird omens were a big deal back then. Etruscans were mad good at reading bird signs, but apparently some Greek dudes were pretty good at it too.

AND now we are done with Book 3. Huzzah! Only 21 left to go! Sunday we shall start in on Book 4.

Agamemnon is such a moron. Really? You’re going to blame Zeus for all this? Because that’s so smart.

Also, I don’t know what happened to Nestor. He turned into, like, a Southern Pirate Who’s Pretending He Might Be Scottish? I’m not really sure?

Also, Menelaus really wants to be important, but he just isn’t.

ALSO, in other news, I am going to be upgrading so I will have room for pictures. Huzzah for having a retail job. ALSO, I got a new drawing pen, which was exciting.

Next time we learn random stories about random people that aren’t really necessary for the story.

There you have it! The beginning of Book 2! I should be able to finish this one up in three parts, but it may take four. I’m still planning stuff out.

Also, Phoenix amuses me. He’s the one pretending to be an insect while Ideomeneus is just like, what?

Sometimes Zeus can be so adorable and then other times…

Although, I struggle with this part of the story because I can see both Hera and Zeus’ side of the story. Zeus is annoyed because Hera is trying to be involved in something that’s really none of her business and Hera is annoyed because Zeus is flirting with other woman and not treating her like an equal; Zeus is defensive because Hera is so aggressive, and Hera is aggressive because Zeus is so condescending… There is a lot going on there.

Anyway. There you go! The end of Book 1. Sunday we shall begin Book 2.

But I do have a problem. I am running out of my allotted image space on WordPress and I do not have money to upgrade. I only have 1-3 more posts before I will hit a brick wall of NOPE YOU CAN’T POST ANYMORE IMAGES so… 0_0 I have no idea what I’ll do this coming week, and now that I’m in full-swing of my two jobs I’m not sure when I’ll have the time to figure it out -_- ‘Tis a puzzlement. UGH, being part of the Working Class and being poor is STUPID. Ahem. Anyway. We’ll see what happens.

BUT, next Sunday we shall meet Dream and return to Agamemnon and Odysseus.
